New strategies are currently being studied in HIV prevention. One of them, “Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis” or PrEP consists of giving a combination of ARV medications to people who are HIV negative but could be exposed to HIV. The goal is to reduce the risk of infection. To prevent HIV, there are 2 types of PrEP:

  • Continuous PrEP: seronegative people taking antiretrovirals daily to reduce the risk of contracting HIV
  • Intermittent PrEP: planned use of antiretrovirals based on a person’s sexual risks
